People are already buzzing about 8 Habits of Love by Ed Bacon, coming soon from Grand Central Life & Style! Bacon, a leader in peace and interfaith work, has been a regular guest host on Oprah’s Soul Series. The book is, in Bacon’s own words, “a spiritual guidebook to living life through love and connection, not fear and isolation,” and will be on sale on September 11. If you’re as excited as we are and biding your time until publication, you can read the below review from Publishers Weekly; like the Facebook page; check out the book’s website. Be on the lookout for Bacon’s interview in the September issue of O: The Oprah Magazine!
——————————————–
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Rector of All Saints church in Pasadena, Calif., Bacon discusses 21st-century spirituality and the critical role of love as a liberating, joy-filled and guiding force; he has “an unshakeable certainty that within each and every human being there lives a core of love and goodness.” He offers eight simple habits—play, forgiveness, stillness, truth, candor, compassion, community, generosity—to change the way we think and behave. The habit of generosity opens hearts so one may give and receive. Practicing the habit of candor deepens relationships, and the stillness habit restores a calm confidence. The habit of truth causes us to challenge our assumptions about ourselves and others and leads to growth. Along with personal anecdotes, memories, and stories of soul survivors, Bacon interpolates the thoughts of poets, sages, scholars, and writers, such as the Dalai Lama, Thomas Merton, and Alice Walker. Readers who find a life-giving energy pulsing in these pages will pass this book on to those they love.

Sure, Jackie Warner claims that by following her plan exactly, you can reach the goal of her book and lose 10 Pounds in 10 Days. But dieting is hard. Can one person have enough willpower to actually follow through with the diet?

Writer Mary MacVean attempts to answer these questions day-by-day in her series “10 Pounds in 10 Days: Can I do it?” The series, which ran in the L.A. Times July 9-20th, chronicles her mostly-diligent following of Warner’s strict plan. Not to spoil the ending–but even cutting corners here and there MacVean does, in fact, see results.
MacVean’s article is a highly positive review for Warner’s book–and an encouraging read for anyone who might think that dieting is too life-altering to undertake. Read the article, and then check out Jackie Warner’s 10 Pounds in 10 Days: The Secret Celebrity Program for Losing Weight Fast!

One of the first pieces that my mother insisted I have in my wardrobe for New York City was a black dress. “It does everything,” she said, “you can wear it to work, to dinner, to cocktail parties…” And, oh, how right she was. I found a basic dress that was wonderfully tailored to my form, and I’ve worn it countless times since then. I have a wooden, black and brown, African necklace that I love to wear with black ballet flats to work,
but all I have to do is trade in the painted animals for pearls and the flats for heels, and I’m ready to meet my uncle at his club for drinks and head on to a dinner date afterwards.
The Fashion File‘s Janie Bryant has a section devoted to the little black dress (as do most department stores!), and she enumerates on its qualities: “Like a freshly stretched blank canvas, the little black dress desperately seeks color and texture and definition. Its beauty lies in its utter devotion to your whims.

Consider it a supplicant to your style and play Picasso.” Several of her suggestions include a print belt to add a “primal edge and stark contrast,” or to throw a satchel-style bag across your shoulder to create “a new focal line…[and] a more bohemian slant.”
Be sure to check out The Fashion File for even more stunning advice from Janie Bryant, the costume designer of Mad Men!

“Instead of making vegan food, he made food vegan,” says Portia de Rossi of chef Roberto Martin in his new best-selling cookbook, Vegan Cooking for Carnivores. Martin, the personal chef for Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres, serves up over 125 tasty vegan recipes with mouth-watering photographs in Grand Central Life & Style’s newest cookbook.

But Martin asserts that with the proper vegan substitutions, you can still enjoy all of your favorite recipes without giving up any of the flavors you love. Whether you’re going vegan, curious about healthy alternatives, or just curious to see what all the fuss is about, Vegan Cooking for Carnivores won’t disappoint.
